"I understand they are likely more but unless in multiple hundreds a week week after week it's not going to move the needle."

Jonathan introduces the video as a Ukraine war news update for the morning of February 4, 2023.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses
- Ukrainian figures for Russian losses from the previous day: 720 personnel, 3 tanks, 6 APCs, 5 artillery systems, 3 anti-aircraft warfare systems, 4 UAVs, 13 vehicles and fuel tanks, 1 piece of special equipment
- Jonathan notes the anti-aircraft losses are significant if they were surface-to-air missile systems
- Video footage is shown confirming some of the claimed losses, including 3 drones and a Su-25 aircraft being shot down with the pilot parachuting
Israel and Ukraine
- Israeli PM Netanyahu met with French President Macron, who showed willingness to send military aid to Ukraine but is trying to balance support without provoking Russia
- Israel is in a difficult position with 15% Russian speakers and ongoing conflicts in the region that involve using Syrian airspace controlled by Russia
Portugal Tanks
- Portugal has walked back on a decision to send 4 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine, as most of their 37 Leopard tanks are non-operational due to lack of spare parts and ammunition
- Germany is criticizing some NATO partners for withdrawing tank delivery plans
German Leopard 1 Tanks
Germany has approved sending 88 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine, which Jonathan thinks would be fantastic even though they are older, if optics are updated.

Air Defense Systems
France and Italy are delivering a SAMP/T Mamba medium range air defense system to Ukraine in the spring to help defend against Russian drones, missiles and aircraft. This was previously agreed.

Reaper Drone Offer
- The manufacturers of Reaper drones have offered to sell 2 to Ukraine for $1 each, but Ukraine would need to pay $10 million to move them and $8 million per year for maintenance
- A large Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane landed at the US base where Reapers are located, possibly related to this offer
New Russian Vehicles
- A new batch of Russian BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles was spotted, recently delivered by Rostec
- This raises questions of whether Russia is still able to manufacture new equipment or if these were in storage
- One view is that this capability should be taken seriously, while another is that 10 vehicles is insignificant compared to Russia's loss rates and won't move the needle unless hundreds are produced weekly
Belgorod Fire
There was a huge blaze at an oil depot in Belgorod, Russia after shelling. The plant was known to produce metal parts for the Crimean bridge, so this fire deals a double blow.

Russian Troops in Mariupol
- Russia has sent over 30,000 troops to the Mariupol area, which may indicate preparations for an offensive
- The troop numbers have increased by 10-15,000 in the past week, mostly housed in villages near Mariupol
- A Kadyrovite unit of 2-3,000 soldiers also entered a coastal village
- Mariupol is within HIMARS range from the nearest Ukrainian positions
- The troops could be positioned defensively in case of a Ukrainian counteroffensive towards Mariupol, or offensively for Russian plans
Turkish Companies Exporting to Russia
- The Wall Street Journal reported that Turkish companies are exporting goods to Russia that it uses for military purposes
- According to Latvia's PM, companies from Turkey, Kazakhstan and Armenia are reselling sanctioned goods to Russia that it cannot directly purchase
- Russia has been able to acquire many Western components despite sanctions, often through legitimate sales that are diverted at some point in the supply chain
Prisoner Exchange
- 116 Ukrainian servicemen have returned from captivity, including fighters from Mariupol and the Azovstal plant
- There is often criticism in Russia when Azov Regiment soldiers are exchanged, as "denazification" was a stated goal of the invasion
- Prisoner exchanges happen fairly consistently, with both sides holding varying numbers of POWs
