"Bakhmut will go down in history as just a terrible aspect to this war and a really horrible part of the front line here."
Hello Team!
Jonathan starts with two major pieces of news from overnight:
- A huge strike on a Russian barracks in occupied Makiivka, part of Donetsk city. The barracks housed up to 700 mobilized Russian troops and had an ammunition storage in the basement. Hundreds are reported killed, with one soldier saying only 100 out of 600 survived. Russian military blogger Igor Strelkov reported that almost all military equipment near the building was also destroyed.
- On the night of January 1st, Russia launched another wave of Shahed drone attacks, with 45 drones reported by Zelensky. All were reportedly shot down, along with 2 Orlan drones and 1 cruise missile. A fire broke out in Dnipro and there was some damage and injuries in Kyiv from falling debris.

Frontline Updates
In the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna front, there is very little change reported. Some shelling around Vilshana and Pershe Travneve. Possible minor Ukrainian gains north of Bilohorivka. In the Bakhmut area, fierce fighting continues in Soledar, described as probably the most intense area in Ukraine right now with high casualties on both sides. The Russians are using TOS-1 heavy flamethrower systems. Some possible minor Russian gains north of Bakhmut/Soledar, but Ukrainians may have pushed back slightly near Ozaryanivka. No major changes in Bakhmut city center itself. Further south near Donetsk city, shelling reported on Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka, but no significant territorial changes. Vuhledar may have been hit by Russian tank fire, possibly indicating low artillery ammunition stocks as suggested by Perun's recent analysis. On the Zaporizhzhia line, Dorozhnyanka is contested, with conflicting reports on control. Kherson city continues to face heavy Russian shelling. Ukraine is hitting targets on the Kinburn spit/peninsula with artillery. Ochakiv also remains under Russian artillery fire.
