"The Bakhmut sector of the front is a, quote, 'mutual meat grinder of attrition' for Ukrainian and Russian troops. It is pretty terrible for both sides."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the latest figures of Russian losses, which show lower personnel losses but huge equipment losses, including 23 tanks, 16 APCs, 8 artillery systems, and 5 MLRS. He notes this could be due to Ukrainian attacks on Russian equipment accumulations.

Military Aid to Ukraine
Several NATO countries have announced new military aid for Ukraine:
- France will provide AMX-10 RC light tanks and Bastion APCs
- The US will send about 50 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles
- Germany will provide Marder IFVs and help source Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles
The UK has not ruled out sending tanks. Jonathan emphasizes this support is being coordinated through NATO, not just unilateral decisions by individual countries. He also notes that Germany is now the 2nd biggest contributor of aid to Ukraine after the US.

Frontline Update
- No major changes around Kupyansk, Svatove, Kreminna despite heavy fighting. Some possible Ukrainian gains west of Zhelivka.
- In Soledar, the situation has worsened for Ukraine. Russian forces have established control over the southern part of the town and are battling north of the canal plant. Most of Bakhmutske has likely fallen.
- In Bakhmut, Wagner units are advancing, expanding control near key streets. They have cleared a gypsum factory used by Ukrainian forces. The garbage plant remains under Ukrainian control.
- Intense fighting continues around Bakhmut, described as a "mutual meat grinder of attrition". Jonathan argues that while taking Bakhmut would be a strategic gain for Russia, they are expending huge numbers of troops in the process. Without a "game changer" in terms of equipment, their only option is to throw in more mobilized troops, which is not sustainable.
- No significant updates around Avdiivka, Marinka, or Zaporizhzhia. A hospital allegedly used as a military facility was hit in Tokmak.
Other Updates
- There are indications Russia may be preparing for another mobilization round, with data being collected even on those born in 2006 in occupied Donetsk.
- Russia announced a 36-hour ceasefire starting January 6 for Orthodox Christmas. Ukraine dismissed this as a cynical ploy. Fighting is expected to continue.
- Ukraine may be diverting troops intended for a counteroffensive to defend Bakhmut instead, according to some analysis. This feeds into the idea of Bakhmut "fixing" Ukrainian forces.
