Ukraine Conflict: 5-Day Full Frontline Update
Table of Contents 📖
"Remember, we have this problem that I've been talking about so frequently... where Russian commanders make a claim to have taken a town or a village and they can lie up the command to make their reports look better. And then it comes to this crunch moment where they have to actually prove that they control that... So then they have to do these rushed attacks that end up being suboptimal because they should have already been controlling that place."

📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND

Map Key Explanation (Andrew Perpetua & Suriyak Maps)
🎦 00:29-01:00⏩
Jonathan explains the map key used, synthesising data from two main mappers:
- Light Blue Pins: Ukrainian gains (pushing Russian lines back) according to Andrew Perpetua (pro-Ukraine).
- Dark Blue Pins: Ukrainian gains according to Suriyak Maps (pro-Russia).
- Dark Pink/Cherry Red Pins: Russian gains according to Suriyak Maps.
- Light Pink Pins: Russian gains according to Andrew Perpetua.
Northern Border (Sumy/Kursk): Luhnia recaptured by Ukraine
🎦 01:00-02:18⏩
Updates from the northern border area inside Ukraine (Sumy Oblast) and across into Russia (Kursk Oblast):
- The map combines data from both mappers plus trench lines, making it complex.
- Near the border, Andrew Perpetua shows Russian lines mostly behind the border, while Suriyak Maps has them further forward.
- South of Novenka, both mappers show Russian success.
- However, reports indicate Ukrainian forces have recaptured the village of Luhnia (Sumy region), pushing Russians back near the border. This aligns more with Andrew Perpetua's mapping than Suriyak's.
Kursk Oblast (East): Russian gains, conflicting map reports
🎦 02:18-03:18⏩
Further east along the border in the Kursk Oblast sectors where Ukraine held territory:
- Suriyak Maps shows Russians pushing Ukrainians back to the border, closing out the northernmost Kursk sector held by Ukraine.
- Andrew Perpetua presents a significantly different picture, placing the Russian defensive line much further north.
- In another Kursk sector (near Guevo), Andrew Perpetua shows Russian gains moving south.
- Suriyak Maps shows Russians in more control overall but depicts Ukrainians pushing Russians back slightly near Gornal. Jonathan considers these small Ukrainian gains might be map glitches.
Kursk Oblast (Gornal): Reported Ukrainian advance near Gornalsky Monastery
🎦 03:18-04:48⏩
* Jonathan revisits the Gornal area, linking the previously mentioned blue pins (Ukrainian gains per Suriyak) to a specific claim.
- A source reports that Ukrainian forces attacked (rare in Kursk Oblast) and regained control of the Gornalsky Monastery and a wide surrounding area near a river.
- Comparing this claim to the main map, Jonathan notes the river line and suggests this could mean Ukrainians pushed Russians back significantly further than either Andrew Perpetua or Suriyak Maps indicate, potentially right out of the area north of the river.
- He acknowledges the maps or the source could be incorrect.
Kharkiv/North Kupyansk Front: No changes reported
🎦 04:49-05:31⏩
* No news of action near Kharkiv.
- Good news: In the five-day period, no changes were reported north of Kupyansk, specifically where Russians previously made gains west of the Oskil River.
- Jonathan notes these earlier gains were mostly infantry advances due to difficulty getting equipment across the river, and wonders if bridging has occurred.
Pishchane Sector: No changes, possible Russian pause
🎦 05:31-06:02⏩
* Moving south past Kupyansk, there are also no changes reported in the Pishchane sector.
- Jonathan speculates this lack of Russian advance in areas where they previously had momentum (north of Kupyansk and Pishchane) might indicate Russian forces are stretched, pausing to regroup, or have possibly culminated in these sectors.
Torske/Terni Front: Mixed gains, Russians reportedly seize Yekaterinivka
🎦 06:02-07:10⏩
Updates around Torske and Terni:
- Ukrainian gains reported south of Terni (near Yampolivka), pushing Russians back near water features.
- Russian gains reported slightly further northwest, according to both mappers.
- A report claims Russian forces seized the settlement of Yekaterinivka (Le Mans/Lyman direction) and advanced near Novoie.
- This report mentions Russian attempts to flank Novoie and occupy dominant heights.
- Jonathan locates this area on the map, corresponding to the Russian gains shown pushing west.
Siversk Front (Bilohorivka): Russian advances towards Siverskyi Donets River, mapper discrepancies
🎦 07:10-08:18⏩
Developments near Bilohorivka, approaching Siversk:
- Suriyak Maps shows Russian gains moving west along difficult hilly terrain near the Siverskyi Donets River.
- Jonathan highlights this as challenging territory and a threat to Ukrainian defensive positions along sizable hills ("mountainous region").
- The river itself, with its steep bank, provides a protective barrier for Siversk. A Russian breakthrough here could pressure Siversk.
- Jonathan reiterates the massive, months-long discrepancy between Andrew Perpetua and Suriyak Maps in this area, stating somebody (or possibly both) must be "very wrong".
Chasiv Yar Front: No changes reported, ongoing map disagreements
🎦 08:18-08:35⏩
* No changes reported around Chasiv Yar itself in the past five days, which Jonathan calls "really good news for the Ukrainians".
- He notes the significant differences between mappers seen near Siversk are also prevalent north and south of Chasiv Yar and elsewhere along the eastern front.
Toretsk Front: Ukrainian counterattacks reported, significant map discrepancies
🎦 08:35-11:49⏩
Activity around Toretsk:
- The main map shows some small Russian gains.
- However, Jonathan has heard reports of Ukrainian counterattacks. One source claims Ukrainian forces recaptured an industrial facility and pushed Russians back slightly in the southern Zabalka district.
- Jonathan attempts to locate this on the map, highlighting massive differences between Suriyak Maps, Andrew Perpetua, and the source map regarding control around mining areas and spoil heaps south of Toretsk. He suspects Suriyak Maps is likely wrong here.
- Another report details a successful Ukrainian counterattack destroying a Russian penetration northeast of Toretsk. Jonathan identifies the likely location on the map, where a Russian attack up a road was reportedly repelled, aligning roughly with Suriyak Maps' current line after the counterattack.
South of Toretsk (Oleksandropil/Pantelimonivka): Russian gains confirmed
🎦 11:57-12:18⏩
* Both mappers show Russian gains south of Toretsk, around Oleksandropil and Pantelimonivka.
- Jonathan notes these gains emerged somewhat suddenly about six weeks ago and have continued since.
Pokrovsk Direction (T0504 Area): Russian pressure and gains near Tarasivka
🎦 12:18-12:58⏩
* Worrying Russian pressure noted towards the crucial T0504 highway linking Kostyantynivka and Pokrovsk.
- The area near the highway junction (passing south of Chasiv Yar, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Kostyantynivka) faces regular attacks.
- Russians had success taking a key junction but were subsequently pushed back; it's now largely grey zone.
- Suriyak Maps shows Russians being pushed back after initial gains near Tarasivka and Voitove Druhe. Generally, Russians are having the better of the fighting here.
Udachne/Kotlyne Area: Minor Ukrainian pushback reported
🎦 12:58-13:42⏩
* Further along the front towards Pokrovsk, a claim suggests Ukrainians pushed Russians back slightly near Udachne, west of Kotlyne.
- Jonathan recalls Russian sources stating Kotlyne itself has been essentially flattened or razed.
- Russians appear to still control Kotlyne, supplied via a thin route to an agricultural/industrial area.
- Minor Ukrainian gains are shown along the railway line.
Troitske Area: Ukrainian gains shown by Suriyak, discussion on mapping/reporting discrepancies
🎦 13:42-16:16⏩
* Further south, unusually, Suriyak Maps shows several Ukrainian gains (blue pins) around Troitske.
- Jonathan speculates this might be Suriyak Maps correcting its lines after initially reflecting overly optimistic Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) claims.
- He explains a recurring issue: Russian commanders may falsely report capturing locations to superiors. This incorrect information reaches the Russian MoD, which announces the capture. Suriyak Maps then updates its map based on the MoD claim.
- This leads to discrepancies with mappers like Andrew Perpetua, who relies on visual evidence (satellite/drone imagery) and more reliable sources, ignoring MoD claims.
- The commanders who lied eventually face pressure to prove control or advance further, leading to rushed, suboptimal attacks on territory they claimed but didn't hold.
- While Suriyak's map might initially reflect false claims, the Russians often persist until they do eventually capture the area, making Suriyak's map sometimes seem prescient, though inaccurate at the time of the initial claim.
Vuhledar/Andriivka Area: Minor Russian gains
🎦 16:16-16:37⏩
* Andrew Perpetua shows smaller Russian gains further along the front line, consolidating the area around Vuhledar and Andriivka/Kostyantynopil.
- Jonathan notes this area was filled in by Russian forces relatively quickly compared to previous progress there.
Kamyanske Area (Zaporizhzhia): Small Russian gains
🎦 16:37-16:50⏩
* Small Russian gains reported around Kamyanske, described as "half a field or so," near the former Zaporizhzhia reservoir.

Overall Assessment & Easter Truce Impact
🎦 16:50-17:20⏩
* Jonathan concludes that, considering it's a five-day update, there hasn't been a huge amount of change overall.
- He notes that the Orthodox Easter truce likely occurred during this period (approximately a day and a half), which would have reduced activity levels compared to a typical five-day span.
- Weather is thought to have been fairly fine, so the reduced activity is attributed more to the truce.
