"Don't generalize about the war looking at any individual place. They're so different. Bukhladar is massively different from Maryinka, which is massively different from Avdiivka which is massively different from Bakhmut which is massively different from Kubyansk, Svatove, Kreminna etc."

Hello Team!

Jonathan starts with the Ukrainian released figures for Russian losses from the previous day, noting 1,010 liquidated Russian personnel which is a huge number. He says big things have been happening, with obvious activity in Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Vuhledar and Mariinka. Things seem to have got stuck from Kupiansk down to Kreminna.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA

  1. These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
  2. These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
  3. All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
  4. Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
  5. Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
  6. Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
  7. Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
  8. All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
  9. Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.

Hits and Losses

  • Unknown partisans near Vladivostok have burned a Su-27 fighter jet at a Russian airbase, which Jonathan considers significant damage.
  • A Russian Zala Lancet kamikaze drone took out a British-supplied Stormer anti-aircraft vehicle. Jonathan notes it's significant that it's taking out anti-aircraft equipment.
  • Ukrainians hit a Buk medium range anti-aircraft missile system, rendering it inoperable based on the explosion.
  • 10 explosions were recorded in Melitopol according to locals. Berdyansk and Mariupol along the southern coast are also being hit by Ukrainian HIMARS or Vilkha-M rockets.
  • Russian airstrikes are hitting the city of Kostiantynivka, a reinforcement hub for Bakhmut that will likely be a main objective after Bakhmut and Chasiv Yar.

Military & Humanitarian Aid

  • Pakistan plans to supply 44 T-80UD tanks to Ukraine in exchange for Western aid. This is likely a shrewd deal for Pakistan to get more money than they originally paid for the tanks 25 years ago. The tanks would be very useful for Ukraine.
  • After meetings with Zelensky, Finland is considering sending old F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets to Ukraine, though Jonathan questions their usefulness. Norway has committed to sending a couple extra NASAMS air defence systems which are very good.
  • Canada has banned the import of Russian steel and aluminium.
  • The International Group for Blocking Assets of Sanctioned Russians has frozen over $58 billion worth of assets in the past year.
  • China supplied Russia with dual-purpose parts for helicopters in 2022 that can be innocently imported but used for military purposes to bypass sanctions.
  • Russia is sending captured Western weapons like Javelins and Stingers to Iran for them to examine the technology and attempt to replicate. This has always been a concern for the US in providing certain advanced weapons.

Geopolitics

  • Xi Jinping was unanimously re-elected as President of China for an unprecedented 3rd term after changing the rules to remove term limits. Jonathan argues the 100% vote shows China is not a real democracy.
  • Russian forces in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia have been placed on high alert and deployed to the border. Over 1000 vehicles have left these regions for Russia in the past 24 hours over fears conflict could erupt. Traffic jams are reported at the border crossing.
  • Turkey has banned transit of EU/US sanctioned goods to Russia through its territory after pressure from Western allies. Many countries don't really care about the Ukraine war as much as trade/money so the US/EU have to pressure them to uphold sanctions.
  • The UK Minister of Culture has called for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be banned from international competitions. She appealed to major Olympic sponsors to influence the IOC's decision. Jonathan sees valid arguments on both sides but would lean towards a ban to make Russia feel like a pariah state and get internal kickback from their population, though it could also cause Russians to double down against the international community.

Wrap Up

Jonathan notes he has a long list of content to cover. He fractured his elbow after a fall due to his MS but can still work on the computer. He will have a frontline update and pre-recorded extra video later as it's the weekend.
