📍 FRONT-LINE UPDATE -🗺️ MAP LEGEND

Northeast Sector
- The northeast sector from Kupyansk to Svatove to Kreminna is relatively quiet with only some repelled offensive operations reported
- There is a bit of activity around the Bilohorivka and Serebryanka areas but no significant changes
Bakhmut
- Geolocated footage shows Russian forces have advanced in northwestern Bakhmut towards Khromove
- However, this does not indicate new gains based on Jonathan's previous mapping
- There are claims of Ukrainian counterattacks around Bakhmut, particularly to the north and south of the city
- The Russians appear to be deprioritizing the Bakhmut offensive in favor of preparing defenses against an anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive
- This puts the Wagner Group in a difficult position as they persist in Bakhmut
- A destroyed Ukrainian bridge over the canal west of Bakhmut near Chasiv Yar was likely destroyed by the Russians, not Ukrainians
- Bakhmut was heavily hit by Russian incendiary munitions causing significant damage
Avdiivka, Marinka and Southern Fronts
- The ISW reports unsuccessful Russian offensive operations near Avdiivka and Marinka
- A Russian nationalist claimed Ukrainian forces pushed Russians from positions west of Velyka Novosilka during limited counterattacks
- No significant news from the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson fronts, possibly due to operational security on the Ukrainian side
Insights on the Bakhmut Decision
Jonathan shares some insights from Mick Ryan on Ukraine's decision to keep defending Bakhmut:
- Very few people have the full information to judge whether it was the right call
- Military considerations likely included attriting Russians, distracting them from Ukrainian offensive preparations, and deceiving them about priorities
- Political considerations include not wanting to give Putin even a minor victory and maintaining the perception of Ukrainian success
- The decision provides insight into how Zelensky thinks and collaborates with his senior military advisors in executing war strategy
- The "unequal dialogue" of civil-military interaction is an important part of Ukraine's approach
Wrap Up
In general, the frontlines appear relatively calm, but this could be the "quiet before the storm." There may be Ukrainian operational security in play, delaying the release of some information. Jonathan will aim to provide an extra update later in the day if possible. He thanks viewers for watching this frontline update.
