Jonathan reviews the latest reported losses from the Ukrainian General Staff. 390 liquidated Russian personnel is one of the lowest figures seen for some time, indicating the Russian offensive has culminated. However, 7 artillery systems were taken out, suggesting the Ukrainians are shaping the battlefield for a counter-offensive by targeting equipment that causes them the most issues.

- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Troop Losses
The BBC and Medusa have compiled data on Russian troop losses by scouring the internet for evidence of funerals and death announcements. They focused on the 331st Parachute Regiment, one of the units that has suffered heavy casualties. The regiment originally deployed with 1,000-1,200 soldiers but may now only number 300-400 at the front after taking losses and receiving poorly trained replacements.

Strikes on Melitopol
There is growing chatter that strikes on Melitopol indicate the Ukrainians are preparing for a counter-offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region. Melitopol is a key logistics hub supplying Russian forces in Kherson and Crimea. The Ukrainians seem to be telegraphing their intentions, but this could be a feint like the Kharkiv counter-offensive.

Geopolitics
- A former FSO officer claims Putin lives in a bunker due to assassination fears and is terrified of COVID. He doesn't use a mobile phone or the internet, so his knowledge is filtered through state TV and the secret services.
- Russian propagandists are supporting Trump, calling him a "destroyer of America" who can trigger a civil war. They were disappointed he didn't go further on January 6th.
- Latvia has reintroduced mandatory military service for men aged 18-27.
- The US, UK, Albania, and Malta walked out of a UN Security Council meeting where Russia tried to justify deporting Ukrainian children.
- Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen are meeting with Xi Jinping to try and convince China to be less supportive of Russia.
- Bulgaria has closed its ports to all Russian ships.
