Ukraine War Update: Pt 1 - Overnight & Other News - Interception Rates Down
Table of Contents 📖
"I am personally at the moment fairly worried about the predicament for the Ukrainians on a nightly basis. Cumulatively, this is going to really hurt the Ukrainians. If they are getting 20 to 30 drones through air defences on a nightly basis, that's a massive, massive problem."
Hello Team
🎦 00:00.560 - 00:27.280
Jonathan welcomes viewers to the first Ukraine War News Update for 1st May 2025. He mentions a separate breaking news update already released covering a minerals deal and peace negotiation news, urging viewers to check it out.

🪦 DISCLAIMER FOR GENERAL STAFF LOSSES DATA
- These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
- These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
- All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
- Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
- Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
- Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
- Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
- All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
- Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
Russian Losses Update (General Staff Figures 30/04)
🎦 00:27.280 - 01:03.260
Jonathan presents the Ukrainian General Staff figures for Russian losses for the previous day (30th April), applying the usual caveats:
- Personnel: 1,230 (below the recent 1,300+ figures, but consistent with the 1,000-1,300 range seen for some time, excluding the Easter Truce).
- Tanks: 3 (below daily average).
- AFVs: 11 (about half the daily average).
- Artillery Systems: 45 (over double the daily average - a good haul).
- MLRS: 1.
- Anti-Aircraft Warfare Systems: 2 (pretty good).
- Vehicles & Fuel Tanks: 139 (handy number, rarely under 100).

Analysis of Russian Personnel Losses (April 2025 Figures)
🎦 01:03.680 - 02:23.320
Jonathan shares analysis from Tim White regarding Russian personnel losses in April 2025:
- The daily average for April was 1,240, the lowest since August 2024.
- The total for April was 36,240, the fewest since July 2024, even lower than the shorter month of February.
- Jonathan notes the Easter truce would have skewed figures downwards.
- He presents a graph showing Russian losses (dead, wounded, POWs, deserted) over the last year, highlighting April's lower figure compared to preceding months, though still historically high.
- He observes that the periods of highest Russian losses coincided with times they were making territorial gains (e.g., Kursk), suggesting these advances came at a "hugely unsustainable" cost.
High Russian Vehicle Losses and Use of Unarmoured Transport
🎦 02:23.660 - 03:00.700
Jonathan comments on the consistently high number of Russian vehicles and fuel tanks being lost (139 in the latest report).
- He suggests this indicates the Russians are predominantly using unarmoured vehicles for movement near the contact line and even for attacks.
- Examples mentioned include motorcycles, golf buggies, and especially quads, which are reportedly being used frequently.
Russian Mobilisation Efforts and Recruitment Figures
🎦 03:01.400 - 03:25.540
* Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated Russia could mobilise as in World War II if needed.
- However, current strategy relies on financial incentives rather than formal conscription.
- US and EU intelligence sources estimate Russia is recruiting 30,000 to 40,000 soldiers monthly this way.
Scepticism Over Russian Tank Production Figures
🎦 03:26.020 - 04:36.580
Jonathan references a Wall Street Journal article discussed previously, which claimed Russia was building 300 T-90 tanks per year* (not per month as initially misstated in the previous thought process, though Jonathan explores potential monthly breakdown).
- He notes that many viewers rightly questioned this figure.
- Analysis suggests that even if 300 tanks were being produced (implying completed, not just started) per year, this would likely include around 200 refurbished older tanks (not necessarily T-90s, perhaps upgrades) and maybe 90 new T-90s.
- Jonathan considers even these adjusted figures potentially "fairly charitable" to Russia and expresses a desire for accurate numbers.
Putin Acknowledges Ukrainian Presence in Kursk Oblast; Further Reports
🎦 04:36.580 - 05:48.220
* Despite previous boasts by Putin, Shoigu, and Gerasimov about recapturing the entire region, Putin acknowledged yesterday that Ukrainian soldiers remain in Kursk Oblast, according to Russian state media.
- Jonathan shares a report from Max 24 (noting the source often reposts others like Noel Reports and sometimes lacks original sourcing) claiming Ukrainian forces broke through Russian defences in another location in the Kursk region.
- He treats this second report with caution, awaiting more information, acknowledging it could just be rumour.
HIMARS Strike Destroys Russian Buk Air Defence System
🎦 05:51.640 - 06:20.928
* Jonathan includes a video showing the destruction of a Russian Buk air defence system by a HIMARS strike.
- He notes recent sightings of HIMARS strikes, indicating Ukraine continues to use them effectively despite potential questions about missile supply from the US.
Drone Attack Damages Russian S-400 Radar Near Saki, Crimea
🎦 06:20.928 - 09:01.909
* Reports indicate a drone attack on Russian S-400 Triumph air defence positions near Saki, Crimea, around 25th April.
- Jonathan links this to a previous report of a battery being targeted, where initial images proved old, but the event itself might still have occurred.
- Images show damage to at least one radar system (identified by one source as 91N6, by another as 96L6E).
- Jonathan assesses the visible damage, noting it appears the drone hit part of the radar while open, with subsequent photos showing it closed but clearly damaged.
- He questions how sensitive the equipment is and whether the damage is critical.
- Differing reports exist: Noel Reports claims three drones hit, damaging the radar; Crimea Wind Telegram channel claims the radar is severely damaged and possibly disabled.
Ukrainian Drones Destroyed 83,000 Russian Targets in April
🎦 09:02.328 - 09:57.448
* General Syrskyi reported that Ukrainian unmanned systems units destroyed 83,000 Russian targets in April 2025.
- This represents an 8% increase compared to March.
- Jonathan calculates this equates to roughly 2,500 targets (personnel, material, dugouts etc.) hit per day, calling the figure "incredible" and "absolute insanity".
Ukrainian Drone Strikes Target Russian Military Transport in Belgorod
🎦 09:57.448 - 11:03.629
* Tim White reports ongoing Ukrainian drone activity in Belgorod Oblast, Russia.
- Drones are targeting Russian military transport on main roads near the border.
- A video shows one vehicle burning while another passes.
- A specific area mentioned is the 14K8 route between Valuyky and Vydelevka, described as a "danger area" under Ukrainian drone fire control.
- Jonathan intends to locate this area on his maps for a future update.
Russian Missile and Drone Attack Statistics (30/04 & 01/05)
🎦 11:03.749 - 12:37.937
Jonathan provides statistics for recent Russian air attacks:
- Attack on 30/04 (reported late):
- 108 Shahed drones launched.
- 72 intercepted (67% success rate; 30% got through). Jonathan notes the stats came out late, coinciding with poor results for Ukraine.
- Attack Overnight (30/04 - 01/05):
- 5 Iskander ballistic missiles launched (0 intercepted). Jonathan speculates they likely hit military targets as no civilian hits were widely reported.
- 170 Shahed drones launched (numbers returning to previous highs after a drop, suggesting production recovery).
- 142 stopped (74 shot down, 68 by Electronic Warfare). This means 28 drones (16%) got through.
Analysis and Concern Over Decreasing Drone Interception Rates
🎦 12:38.237 - 13:24.437
* Jonathan expresses significant concern about the recent drone interception rates (67% and 84%).
- While the 84% rate for the latest attack is better than the previous night's 67%, it still means 28 drones penetrated defences.
- He contrasts this with previous rates often between 95-100%.
- He states he is "fairly worried" about Ukraine's predicament, warning that 20-30 drones getting through nightly represents a "massive, massive problem" cumulatively.
F-16 Filmed Shooting Down Shahed Drone
🎦 13:24.437 - 13:39.377
* Jonathan mentions evidence, reportedly caught on camera, of a Ukrainian F-16 shooting down a Shahed drone.
- He finds it "interesting" and "good to see" that F-16s are operating and contributing to air defence.
Overnight Russian Strikes Hammer Odesa
🎦 13:40.617 - 14:19.137
* Odesa was particularly targeted in the overnight drone swarm attack.
- Tim White reported hits on an apartment block and a school.
- Multiple hits were recorded alongside shoot-downs.
- Videos showed large explosions and significant fires in the city.
Odesa Damage; Kyiv Warns of Delayed Cluster Munitions
🎦 14:19.137 - 15:50.237
* Anton Gerashchenko shared images of damage to apartment blocks and residential buildings in Odesa. Jonathan notes the possibility of high-value military targets also being hit, which might not be reported.
- A warning was issued for central Kyiv today (01/05) by Alexander Popovstev, head of Shevchenkivskyi district.
- The warning states that delayed cluster munitions are exploding in the capital (specifically mentioning the Dynitzky district and other places).
- It's suggested these could have been scattered during the night's drone attack. Jonathan calls this potential tactic "nothing short of horrific" and says it should be major news if confirmed.
- Citizens are warned not to approach suspicious objects and to call emergency services immediately.
Kharkiv Hit by Drone Swarm Overnight
🎦 15:50.797 - 16:10.257
* Kharkiv was also targeted overnight.
- No injuries were reported.
- The drone swarm hit two businesses and warehouses in a village just south of the city.
Reflection on Imagery of Ukrainian Emergency Services
🎦 16:10.777 - 17:04.797
* Jonathan shares a picture of Kyiv emergency services working after a drone attack.
- He reflects on the nature of such images coming out of Ukraine. While the context is horrific, the photographs themselves can be visually striking, almost resembling film sets due to the interplay of flashing emergency lights, smoke, and fire creating dramatic colours and lighting.
- He describes some photos he's seen as "beautiful" (quickly correcting himself) or "arresting", highlighting the amazing work of the emergency services.
Update on Ukrainian Drone Strike on Murom Plant, Russia
🎦 17:05.377 - 17:30.937
* Jonathan provides an update on a Ukrainian drone strike against the Murom plant in Russia, citing the "usually well-informed channel" Dozier Sfiona (via Noel Reports).
- Eight Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the plant.
- Damage included: a warehouse and finished products burnt down (likely gunpowder caps destroyed), an admin building destroyed, a hit on a synthesis workshop for explosives.
- The plant's electronic warfare systems reportedly failed to work.
Increased Russian Paranoia and Ukrainian Air Activity Ahead of May 9th
🎦 17:34.877 - 18:21.326
* Russia is reportedly getting increasingly paranoid about Ukrainian aviation activity, especially with the May 9th Victory Day parade approaching.
- There are increasing reports about the volume of Small Diameter Bomb strikes in the Kursk region, with Ukrainian MiGs allegedly operating freely there.
- Two F-16s and one Mirage 2000 were reportedly seen operating in the Volyn region.
- The source claims Ukrainian aviation activity has "increased very much".
Speculation on May 9th Parade and Ukrainian Strategy
🎦 18:21.486 - 19:05.005
* Jonathan notes Budanov's recent comment advising people attending the Moscow parade to "take your earplugs", implying potential explosions.
- Jonathan doubts Ukraine will actually strike the parade, thinking it "fairly pointless".
- However, he states that if he were Budanov, he would deliberately play up the threat of striking the parade.
- The strategic goal would be to cause panic, forcing Russia to concentrate air defences in Moscow, thereby potentially weakening defences elsewhere for Ukraine to exploit.
Report Claims US Senator Marco Rubio May Attend Moscow Victory Day Parade
🎦 19:06.126 - 19:35.586
Zvezda, the TV channel of the Russian Defence Ministry, has worryingly reported that US Senator Marco Rubio might* attend the Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9th. (The transcript incorrectly identifies Rubio as Secretary of State).
- The channel cited "a source in the diplomatic circles" claiming the US might be represented "at a high level".
- Jonathan reacts with disbelief and potential rage, stating he would be "screaming at the screen" and "incandescent with rage" if this happened.
Oil Prices Fall Below Russian Break-even; Saudi Stance May Hurt Russia
🎦 19:35.966 - 20:17.166
* Brent crude oil is reported at $60 per barrel (source: Jay in Kyiv).
- This implies Russian Urals oil would be around $44 per barrel, significantly below Russia's estimated $60 break-even price.
- Jay in Kyiv anticipates Putin pushing for a "reset" soon.
- Reuters reports Saudi Arabia has no intention of cutting production further to support prices and is prepared to endure lower prices. This is seen as potentially damaging to Russia.
- Riyadh was reportedly angered by Kazakhstan and Iraq exceeding OPEC+ production targets.
Report: Starmer and Macron Alerted Trump to Putin's Manipulation
🎦 20:17.706 - 21:44.146
* Jonathan discusses reports (citing Pravda) suggesting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Macron spent months urging Donald Trump to stop pressuring Zelensky and recognise that Putin is manipulating him.
- Jonathan notes Trump has recently seemed more open to the idea that Putin might be deceiving him ("tapping him over").
- He speculates that those around Trump (either ideologically aligned with Russia like Tucker Carlson or Stephen Miller, or afraid to contradict him) and perhaps intelligence services might be unwilling or unable to convey this message directly to Trump, making the intervention by Starmer and Macron significant if true.
Update: OSCE Horrified by Death of Journalist Victoria Roshchyna
🎦 21:44.805 - 22:41.146
* Jonathan follows up on the horrific case of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, whose body was returned from Russian custody missing her brain, eyes, and part of her trachea.
- The OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe) has expressed horror at the details of her death.
- He notes positively that her story seems to be gaining traction and being amplified widely, which is important given the "disgusting" treatment she and others have received.
Disgust at Russian Child Propaganda Event
🎦 22:41.146 - 23:34.386
* Jonathan expresses his deep despise for Russian child brainwashing and propaganda, showing a clip (though the audio/text description is garbled in the transcript) of an event involving many children.
- He points out a Soviet flag visible in the clip, commenting "they're just going full on USSR now."
- He states plainly that it "disgusts" him.
Wrap up
🎦 23:34.785 - 24:04.505
* Jonathan signs off, thanking viewers.
- He mentions his output will be "a bit funky" today due to personal commitments.
- He plans to run a live stream tonight at 8 PM UK time, featuring members of the 'Car for Ukraine' convoy team, to discuss their experiences over a beer.
