Frontline Update
- The Institute for the Study of War reports Russian forces are experiencing a shortage of officers and counter-battery capabilities, especially in the Zaporizhzhia direction
- Russians made some gains in the northeast near Sinkivka and are pushing south, possibly enveloping the town. Ukrainians are blowing up bridges near Kupyansk to slow Russian advances.
- A Russian armoured convoy was obliterated near Spirne, northeast of Bakhmut
- Russians are attacking Klishchiivka south of Bakhmut but Ukrainians have an overlooking position to repel them
- Ukrainians raided a Russian-held mine south of Krasnohorivka with two tanks
- Ukrainians have advanced on both sides of Andriivka
Military Aid
- The Netherlands will provide 42 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine after training pilots and engineers, though there is some confusion over the exact number as the Dutch Air Force only has 24 operational F-16s
- Denmark will transfer 19 F-16 fighters to Ukraine, with the first 6 planes arriving closer to New Year
- Germany is still discussing supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine
- Germany has proposed allocating €5 billion in aid to Ukraine every year
- A CNN poll shows 55% of Americans now oppose more funding for Ukraine from Congress, a reversal from early in the conflict. Jonathan argues the US needs to better educate the public on the details of the funding.
Geopolitics
- Rumours suggest Zelensky may call early parliamentary and presidential elections while he is still seen as a national hero
- When asked about conceding territory, Zelensky asked if Russia would exchange Belgorod, using rhetoric to dismiss the idea
- In an address to the Danish parliament, Zelensky thanked Denmark for their belief in Ukraine and spoke about the power of shared values and solidarity
- Serbia has declared readiness to help Hungary's Orban with transit of Russian gas bypassing Ukraine
- Kosovo has become the 20th country to join the G7 Declaration on Security Guarantees for Ukraine
- In Germany, a pro-Russian demonstration in Cologne was a "total flop", attracting more counter-protesters. German special police later raided the organizers' house suspecting they were hiding weapons of war.
