"Something is rotten in the state of the Kremlin. And it is really serious. And I think this will only get more serious."
Hello Team!
Jonathan provides an update on the Ukraine war for July 16, 2023. He starts by going over the latest Russian losses reported by the Ukrainian General Staff, noting they are consistent numbers that will degrade Russian forces over time.

Russian losses and artillery
- Intercepted call from Russian serviceman in Avdiivka complains about significant losses, negligent attitude of doctors and soldiers being treated as cannon fodder
- Video shows something being shot out of the sky, possibly a drone
- Analysis of Russian artillery losses and stockpiles. Russia is losing up to 20 artillery pieces per day plus a dozen barrels needing replacement due to maintenance. Satellite imagery shows Russia has used up 5000 towed artillery pieces from storage. Questions remain over how much of the remaining stockpile is usable. Russia is bringing 70-80 year old artillery to the front lines, suggesting issues with their stocks.
- Ukraine is now firing 2.5 times more artillery shells than Russia, a significant change. Storm Shadow missiles are forcing Russia to move ammo depots further back.
Russian losses of high-ranking officers
Several high-ranking Russian officers have been recently lost:
- Colonel Maxim Karlamov, commander of 96th Separate Intelligence Brigade
- Former commander of 382nd Naval Infantry Battalion Alexander Gorin died near Orikhiv
- Commander of reconnaissance unit of 810th Naval Infantry Brigade also killed near Orikhiv
This suggests elite Russian marines are now manning front line positions in this area rather than mobilized troops, which they are running out of.

Strikes on Ukraine
- Kharkiv hit by 4 S-300 missiles overnight. 2 intercepted, 2 hit civilian areas.
- Kramatorsk also shelled again as are many front line towns like Nikopol and Marhanets daily
- Video of strike on Oleksii shared, possibly a garbage truck hit
Purges and infighting in Russian military leadership
- Major General Vladimir Seliverstrov, commander of 106th Airborne Division, fired for "unaccommodating character", likely for standing up for his troops like recently dismissed General Popov
- Russian airborne troops threaten to abandon front lines to protect their commander Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky who may be next to be dismissed for refusing to use troops to suppress Prigozhin's rebellion
- Putin and Shoigu continuing purge of unreliable commanders, dismissing several more generals
- ISW reports factions within Kremlin and security services fighting for control and exploiting insider information for political gain
- Jonathan comments this infighting is serious and likely to get worse as people realize the war is not good for Russia. Putin's power vertical is narrow but cracks are showing.
Russian propaganda
- Propagandist Simonyan claims Russia has never waged wars of conquest, subjugated or threatened anyone and questions why Russia is hated. Jonathan points out the blatant falseness of these claims.
- Putin says Russia has cluster munitions but hasn't used them, but will if Ukraine does. However, there is ample evidence Russia has already used them indiscriminately against civilians, e.g. in Kharkiv.
Wrap up
Jonathan is splitting this update into two parts to keep the length manageable. He will cover the front lines, military aid and geopolitics in part 2.
